R+P Post 12: Artists/bands that have influenced my ideas

The bands that influenced our ideas most of all were modern indie bands like Echosmith and Best Coast, and bands that are a bit quirky and colourful.

New Young Pony Club.

We liked New Young Pony Club's fashion as it is colourful and quirky, pairing lots of different styles together. Another reason they influenced our ideas is because they have a different sound to mainstream music and are effective in appealing to a niche audience using an edgy style that sets them apart from other artists.

Echosmith.

Another band that has influenced our ideas is Echosmith. Their interesting mix of smart and casual clothing has definitely influenced our ideas on clothing and costume for our band. Echosmith is also a band made up of siblings, which is a common thing among indie pop bands, so we are thinking of having some of our band members be siblings. This adds a different relationship between the band members which can allow us to portray our band as having a close connection with each other. Additionally, this is likely to be more relatable with our audience, as bigger fans are likely to know they are siblings, while some of our audience is likely to actually be in an amateur band with their sibling.

Best Coast's album Crazy For You.

Alvvays.

Both Best Coast and Alvvays have music similar to our song choice n terms of style, and they have also been very influential in deciding our overall band look. Best Coast's image is very influential, as they are all about their music, and not the money. For example, the lead singer, Bethany Cosentino, turned down a deal with a record label at the age of 15 because they wanted to turn her into a "pop-princess", which was not what she wanted. Part of the reason Best Coast is so popular with their audience is because they stay grounded to their own beliefs, which is something we can definitely use for our band's identity. Alvvays have helped us with our group's aesthetic, as they incorporate pastel colours (which are associated with indie pop) and wear smart/casual clothing. Additionally, the lead singer wears almost tom-boyish clothes paired with feminine skirts and hair to portray her confident identity.
