R+P Post 6: Current trends in Popular Music

These are some of the BBC's predictions on music consumption in the near future:
  1. More music will be made for shorter attention spans.
This tells us that a more successful music video for our audience will be one that has a lot going on in it and keeps the audience's eyes moving and that can keep a modern audience's attention. This might mean we have lots of fast-paced editing sequences, direct address to the camera from the performer, and a narrative-based music video. This will appeal to the audience as it is likely to keep their attention, and not get boring.
  2. Music is about to get more political. This will allow us to truly reflect and almost show off an "authentic" artist image, using their political beliefs and opinions in the marketing campaign to gain a more relatable image.

  3. Release campaigns will become fluid experiments in creativity. This means that our website could have more creative/modern marketing techniques, such as an interactive marketing campaign involving social media, or even a campaign that takes advantage of new technologies like a simple 360o tour (or something similar).
  4. Authenticity will rise to the top.
This is mostly about artist image. It shows that a more authentic artist image is more likely to appeal to the audience. For example, using the artist's actual beliefs and values and showing the more realistic/relatable side of the artist is more likely to appeal and relate to the audience. This ties in with Dyer's artist theory, that states an artist's image is both real, and a construct of marketing. In order to make sure to appeal to the audience, marketing is needed to show off the best parts of an artist, but in order to keep authenticity, these need to be highlighting the actual beliefs, behaviour, and characteristics of the artist as a person.
