R+P Post 7: Record Labels of interest

We looked at many different record companies that produce music for independent artists and alternative bands, such as Father Daughter Records, 4AD, Jagjaguwar, and Harvest Records. We looked at all of these record labels, as they all produce indie music similar to our own song choice.

HARVEST RECORDS

We looked most closely at Harvest Records, as it has produced the music of some of our influential existing bands, such as Best Coast, Glass Animals, and other famous indie bands like The Libertines. Additionally, Harvest Records are a subsidiary of Capitol Music Group, which is a subsidiary of Universal Music Group, owned by Universal. This has shown me that like in film, music distributors are often horizontally and vertically integrated, and owned by a big conglomerate like Universal. However, Harvest Records mostly produces progressive rock music and similar alternative genres.

Our group have decided that our own record label for our band will be a sister company to Harvest Records, as it will focus on only distributing indie pop music music. This will suit our indie band and our song choice of interest.
