R+P Post 8: Possible tracks for the single

The first thing we did as a group to find a suitable song was to make a long list of potential song choices. We each came up with lots of song choices and played them in a group meeting. We then each said what we thought of each song, and if it was appropriate for the task. We eventually came to this list:

SOME OF OUR FAVOURITES:

Some of our favourite songs included Time To Pretend by MGMT, The Suburbs by Arcade Fire, and Halo by Cage the Elephant.

Time to Pretend by MGMT was one of our favourites because it is a fun song with interesting instruments in in, which would let us experiment more with visuals and different effects to reflect the strange instruments (especially in the opening). The lyrics also reference teenage life, growing up, and nostalgia over the past, which was something we all thought would make for a great music video. However, this song is very famous, so there is a risk with plagiarism, and it is over 3 minutes long, which we were trying to avoid.

The Suburbs by Arcade Fire was one of our favourites because the lyrics reference growing up, for example the first line "in the suburbs I learnt to drive". This would have allowed us to create a really strong narrative-based music video. However, none of us found the song very interesting, as it is quite slow and repetitive, and we felt this very much limited the number of ideas we would have about the music video. Additionally, this song is over 3 minutes long, which would mean we would have to fade out the music so that our video s the required length. We really wanted to try and avoid this because we all want our finished product to look neat, completed, and realistic.

Halo by Cage the Elephant was one of our favourites because it has really nice guitar lines (for example the opening and the chorus) as well as beautiful vocals. Additionally, we thought the song had the feel of having a narrative and performance based music video. The song was also less than 3 minutes long, which was definitely something we wanted to have. We didn't choose this song, however, because we weren't very inspired by it and it didn't immediately spark ideas from us.

OUR SONG CHOICE

We have chosen the song Sweet Dream by Black Cat Zoot. We chose it because it is an interesting genre that will be fun to make a music video for (indie pop), and when we listened to the song, we all immediately started coming up with ideas for a music video. It has lyrics about reminiscing over the past, which is a theme we all thought would be interesting to pursue in a music video. It is also less than 3 minutes long, so we will be able to include the full song in the video. The lyrics reference lots of things from the past such as "Lucy in the sky", which will allow us to make lots of intertextual references that our audience can pick up on. Additionally, there are no inappropriate references, and the song is free due to the band being independant, so there is no copyright issue.
